Setting language and region

The website can be viewed with your preferred language and region. Language determines the user interface as well as the way time, date, and numerical values appear. Region sets the featured maps on the home page, content in the gallery, and the default extent of new maps in the ArcGIS.com map viewer. Region also determines the units for the map scalebar, measure tool, and directions tool. The United States region sets the units to miles and feet. All other regions set the units to meters and kilometers.

Language

The website supports the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified Han), Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. You can set the language in your browser or through your user profile. Most browsers have a language setting in the Options menu; check your browser's Help for the specific steps. The user profile setting takes priority over the browser setting.

Follow the steps below to set the language in your profile.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in to the website.
  2. Click your name in the top banner. This opens your profile page.
  3. Click the Edit my profile button.
  4. Choose your language preference from the Language options.
  5. Click the Save button.

Region

Featured maps on the home page, content in the gallery, and the default extent of new maps in the ArcGIS.com map viewer can be set for a specific region. Region also determines the units for the map scalebar, measure tool, and directions tool. The United States region sets the units to miles and feet. All other regions set the units to meters and kilometers.

The following regions are available: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greenland, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mali, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Singapore, Slovak Republic, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Venezuela, and World.

Some of the website headings and item details may appear in the language associated with the region. For example, if you set your region to France, the gallery headings and web map descriptions appear in French. Some of the basemap labels may be localized as well.

If you access the site anonymously or if you have not set a region for your public account, ArcGIS Online automatically uses the region for the country from which you are accessing the website. For example, if you access the ArcGIS Online website from the United States, your region is automatically set to United States. If a region is not available for that country, ArcGIS Online uses the World region. Users with a public account can override these defaults by choosing a region.

Users with an organizational account cannot choose a region; administrators set it at the organizational level. For more information, see Configuring general settings for the website.

If you have a public account, follow the steps below to set your preferred region.

Steps:
  1. Verify that you are logged in to the website.
  2. Click your name in the top banner. This opens your profile page.
  3. Click the Edit my profile button.
  4. Choose your regional preference from the Region options.
  5. Click the Save button.

Language and region for your organization

If you are a member of an organization, your administrator may have set the language and region for the organization. If your browser uses a different language, you will see that language. You can also change the language you see by updating your profile. You cannot change the region.
