Creating a layer package

You can use a layer package to wrap up the contents of a single layer or group layer. This creates an .lpk file that can be moved to a file server or sent in an email to share your military features (including the geometry, attributes, symbology and layer settings).

Steps:
  1. In the ArcMap table of contents, right-click the layer or group layer you want to share.
  2. Click Create Layer Package.

The Layer Package dialog box appears.

  3. In the dialog, click Save package to file.
    NoteNote:

Optional: A default location for the new .lpk file can be changed by clicking the open folder button next to the file path and browsing to a new folder.

  4. On the left side in the dialog, click Item Description.

The Item Description window appears in the Layer Package dialog. The Summary and Tags fields are required. The optional Description and Credits are copied from the layer.

  5. Type a summary for the package.

The Summary is a required field and is a short description of the layer. The Description is a more detailed explanation of the package contents and uses.

  6. In the Tags text box, type in one or more comma-separated terms or phrases for your layer package. ArcGIS uses these terms and phrases to match against when a user performs searches, such as in the ArcGIS.com search text box.
    TipTip:

If you are signed in to ArcGIS Online, click the ArcGIS.com Tags... button to browse and add tags from ArcGIS.com.

  7. In the Layer Package dialog box, click Analyze.

ArcMap checks the layer's suitability to be packaged. Problems are listed in a Prepare table at the bottom of the ArcMap window. You must resolve any errors before you can continue. A common error is not typing a layer description in the layer's Layer Properties dialog box's General tab.

  8. In the Layer Package dialog box, click Share.

The Packaging dialog box appears. When packaging completes, a Succeeded dialog box appears.

  9. Click OK to close the Succeeded dialog box.

Posting to ArcGIS.com
