Creating a coverage relationship class

This topic applies to ArcGIS for Desktop Standard and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced only.

You can create a coverage relationship class from the Catalog tree or you can use the Join Info Tables tool; however, you need an Advanced license to use this geoprocessing tool.

Steps:

1. In the Catalog tree, right-click the coverage for which you want to create a relationship class and click File > New > Coverage Relationship Class.
2. Type a name for the new relationship class.
3. Click the origin table or feature class.
4. Click the destination table or feature class and click Next.
5. Click the type of relationship you want to create and click Next.
6. Type the forward and backward path labels for the relationship and click Next.
7. Click the appropriate cardinality for this relationship and click Next.
8. Click the option to add or not to add attributes to this relationship class and click Next.
9. If you chose to add attributes, you will be prompted to define the attributes that will be added. After you define the attributes click Next.
10. Click the first drop-down arrow to see a list of attributes in the origin table or feature class. Click the primary key for this relationship.
11. Click the second drop-down arrow to see a list of attributes in the destination table or feature class.

    Only those attributes that have the same data type as the primary key are listed.

12. Click the foreign key for this relationship.
13. Click Next.
14. Review the options you specified for the new relationship class. If you want to change something, you can go back through the wizard by clicking Back.
15. When you are satisfied with your options, click Finish.

    The new relationship class appears in the folder's contents.
