Creating a schematic dataset

Prerequisite:

An ArcGIS for Desktop Standard or ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced license is required for schematic dataset creation.

CautionCaution:

The first time a schematic dataset is created in a geodatabase, there is a set of Schematics system tables that are created. When working in an ArcSDE geodatabase, you must log in as the ArcSDE administrator—that is, as the sde user—to create a first schematic dataset, and to get those Schematics system tables correctly created in the ArcSDE geodatabase. After that, you can delete this first schematic dataset if you don't want it to be owned by the sde user, and log in as a different user to create your own schematic dataset.

Steps:
  1. Start ArcCatalog.
  2. Browse the Catalog tree and click the geodatabase in which you want to create a new schematic dataset, or create a new empty geodatabase.

This could be a personal, file, or ArcSDE geodatabase.

  3. Click the File menu. Alternatively, after browsing the Catalog tree, right-click the desired geodatabase.
  4. Point to New and click Schematic Dataset Schematic Dataset.
  5. Type a name for your new schematic dataset.
    CautionCaution:

Schematics enforces the uniqueness of the schematic dataset name compared to the names of all existing datasets in the geodatabase, not only the names of other schematic datasets in the geodatabase.

  6. Press ENTER.
