Advanced parcel editing options

This topic applies to ArcGIS for Desktop Standard and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced only.

All parcel editing tasks can be performed using the available Parcel Editor options that were configured for you when you installed the software.

There are some instances where advanced parcel editor options are required. These options are not directly accessible in the default configuration of the software, but may be accessed by manually configuring the Parcel Editor Options dialog box by adding an Advanced tab. On this tab you can set options that mimic behavior of prior releases of the software, such as creating jobs manually, using COGO scale and rotation values in parcel measurement views, and editing in a local coordinate system.

Enabling the advanced tab

To access the Advanced tab in the Parcel Editor Options dialog box, modify the windows registry and change the ShowAdvancedOptionsPage key to 1.

Steps:
  1. Click the windows Start menu and click Run.
  2. Type Regedit in the Run dialog box.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \\Software\\ESRI\\Desktop10.2\\ArcMap\\Cadastral.
  4. Right-click the Cadastral folder, point to New, then click DWORD value.
  5. Type ShowAdvancedOptionsPage as the DWORD name.
  6. Double-click the DWORD to edit it.

This opens the Edit DWORD dialog box.

  7. Choose the Decimal option.
  8. In the Value Data field, enter 1 to display the Advanced tab. (Entering 0 hides the tab.)
  9. Click OK to create the registry key.

Working with fabric jobs in manual mode

Whereas automatic mode creates a job in the job book for you automatically when you edit a parcel fabric, in manual mode, you create a job manually, and then select and extract your parcels into the job.

Enable manual mode

To enable Manual mode, open the Parcel Editor Options dialog box and set the edit mode to manual.

This opens the Parcel Editor Options dialog box.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Parcel Jobs section under Edit Mode click Manual and click OK.

This sets the editing mode to manual and enables the job-workflow commands on the Parcel Editor drop-down menu.

Create and open a new job using the selected parcels

After you have enabled manual mode you can use the Modify command to create and open a new job using the selected parcels.

Steps:
  1. Select the parcels you want to edit.
  2. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click the Parcel Editor drop-down arrow and click Modify.

This enables the selected parcels for editing and dims the display of the surrounding parcels.

Create a job manually

You can also choose to create a parcel fabric job manually before extracting and opening your parcels for editing. This allows you to explicitly define which parcels are to be edited without having to open the job. By default, the surrounding parcels are also added to the job.

Steps:
  1. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click the drop-down menu and click Start Editing.
  2. Click the drop-down menu again, and click Create Job.
  3. This opens the Create New Job dialog box.
  4. In the Create New Job dialog box, type a job name, description, and so on.

    A job name is required.

  5. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click the Select Parcel Features Select Parcel Features tool and select the parcels you want to edit in the fabric job.
  6. In the Edit Job Parcels section, click Add.

This adds the selected parcels to the job. The selected parcels are highlighted red, and the surrounding reference parcels are highlighted blue.

  7. If you need to add additional parcels that lie within a specific radius from your selected parcels, do the following:
    • In the Job Parcels section, click Parcels within and type a radius value in the text box.
    • Click the Units drop-down arrow and choose the appropriate unit of measure for your radius value.
    • Click Get. This draws a buffer line in your map and adds all parcels to the job that lie within or intersect the radius you specified.
  8. If you need to add additional parcels manually, do the following:
    • In the Job Parcels section, click Choose parcels manually and select the parcels using the Select Parcel Features Select Parcel Features tool.
    • Click Add.
  9. If you need to include any unselected parcels that lie between other parcels, click the Include parcels to fill gaps in the selection check box.

This adds the unselected parcels that satisfy this criterion to the fabric job during the extraction process.

  10. To control when the job opens, do the following:
    • To save the job and open it, click the Open job when I click OK check box.
    • To save the job to the job book and not open it, leave this option unchecked.
  11. Click OK.

This adds the job to the job book.

NoteNote:

Edit parcels are edit-locked to prevent the dimension attributes for any overlapping jobs in an ArcSDE multiuser geodatabase from being edited. Neighboring parcels are unlocked.

Save and close a parcel fabric job

Use the Finish Job command to stop and save your edits in the fabric job.

Steps:
  1. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click Finish Job.

This applies all of your edits in the fabric job to the parcel fabric as a single edit transaction.

NoteNote:

You must save the edit session to commit the changes from the fabric job to the geodatabase.

Discard your changes

Use the Discard Changes command to discard any changes you made to the latest extract of a parcel fabric.

Steps:
  1. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click Discard Changes.

This reverts the parcel fabric job back to the last submitted version of the job.

Open a Job book

Use the Job Book command to open and edit fabric jobs.

    • Right-click the job and click Open.
  3. To view the parcel information or to change the metadata such as the description or title, right-click the job and click Properties.
NoteNote:

If the parcel fabric edit mode is changed to automatic mode, jobs in the Job Book cannot be reopened for continued editing.

Applying COGO scale and rotation in parcel measurement views

You can also set parcel view behavior to use the COGO scale and rotation values when you click the Parcel Measurement View button Parcel Display Toggle on the Parcel Details dialog box.

Advanced tab on the Parcel Editor Options dialog box

Steps:
  1. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click the Parcel Editor drop-down arrow and click Options .

This opens the Parcel Editor Options dialog box.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Parcel view behavior section, check Apply scale and rotation when opening parcels in measurement view and click OK.

The next time you click the Parcel Measurement View button Parcel Display Toggle on the Parcel Details dialog box, it will display your parcels using the COGO scale and rotation values.

    Rotated parcel

    NoteNote:

When a parcel fabric is accurate and where COGO dimensions are consistent with their recorded values, there most likely will not be any noticeable differences between parcel measurement view and the view of a parcel in its fixed, joined location.

Opening parcels in a local coordinate system

You can open and edit parcels in a local coordinate data frame instead of in the projected map.

Steps:
  1. On the Parcel Editor toolbar, click the Parcel Editor drop-down arrow and click Options .

This opens the Parcel Editor Options dialog box.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Parcel view behavior section, check View and edit parcels individually in a local coordinate system and click OK.
    NoteNote:

When a parcel is opened in a local coordinate data frame, the parcel is always displayed using the COGO dimensions on parcel lines (including scale and rotation).
