Setting visibility range

Normally, if a layer is turned on in the table of contents, the map viewer will draw it. However, as you zoom out, it may become difficult to see more detailed information, or as you zoom in, information may become too coarse. While you can turn off a layer, this can be inconvenient and time consuming, especially if your map contains several layers or if you change the scale frequently as you work.

You can determine at what scale a layer in your map is displayed by setting a visibility range on the layer. If you own the layer, you can save the visibility property with the item so the same scale range applies anytime the layer appears in a web map.

To set the visibility range, follow the steps below.

Steps:

1. Verify that you are logged in if you want to save the changes to a map you own or save a copy of a map owned by somebody else.
2. Open the map you want to change in the map viewer.
3. Click the Details button.
4. Click the Contents button.
5. Navigate to the layer where you want to set a visibility range.
6. Click the arrow to the right of the layer name.
7. Click Set Visibility Range. A pop-up window appears.
8. Choose the minimum scale range or click the Use Current button to use the current extent of the map.
9. Choose the maximum scale range or click the Use Current button to use the current extent of the map.
10. Click Save to save changes to the web map.
11. If you own the layer and want the visibility range to apply to the item anytime it appears in a web map, click Save Item Properties.
