Viewing Data Using Tracking Viewer

Prerequisite:

Tracking Viewer requires that a supported version of the Adobe Flash Player be installed on the web browser that it is run in. The machine where Tracking Server is running must also have the Flex Policy Server running, so that Tracking Viewer has permission to access it. The Tracking Server Controller can be used to start the Flex Policy Server.

Tracking Viewer can be run either remotely (on a different machine than the Tracking Server it connects to) or locally (on the same machine as the Tracking Server it connects to). Also, Tracking Viewer may or may not be deployed to a Web server.

To use Tracking Viewer remotely, it is best that it be deployed on a Web server such as Apache or Internet Information Server. The Tracking Server Post Install application can be used to accomplish this. For more information, refer to the Tracking Server Install Notes document that was provided with your software.

To view real-time tracking services using Tracking Viewer, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. If you are using Tracking Viewer and it is deployed on a Web server, open a web browser and enter the following URL: http://<host_name>/TrackingServer/Viewer/index.html. For example, if you are connecting to Tracking Viewer and it is deployed locally, you would use: http://localhost/TrackingServer/Viewer/index.html. If you are connecting to Tracking Viewer and it is deployed on a machine named xyz, you would use: http://xyz/TrackingServer/Viewer/index.html

To run Tracking Viewer if it is not deployed to a Web server, you must enter the full path to the Viewer/index.html file in a web browser, or simply open the file. A typical installation location for the “Viewer” folder is C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\TrackingServer

  2. If your web browser has a supported version of the Flash Player installed, you will see Tracking Viewer in your browser. If not, you will be prompted to install a supported version of the Flash Player.

  3. In the Server field, enter either localhost (to connect to a local Tracking Server) or the name of the machine where your Tracking Server is installed.

The default value of sampletrackingserver1.arcgis.com (along with the default Port value of 4503) can be used to connect to a publicly available Tracking Server. To connect to your Tracking Server, both of these values will need to be set to the appropriate values for your Tracking Server.

  4. In the Port field, enter the client connection port of your Tracking Server.

The default port number is 4503, in order to connect to the publicly available Tracking Server sampletrackingserver1.arcgis.com. To connect to your Tracking Server, a different port number may be used. For example, a standard Tracking Server installation uses port 5506.

  5. Click the Connect button. The connection status should change to green and say “Connected”.

If your Tracking Server has been configured to use authentication, you will also need to enter a valid username and password before you click Connect.

  6. A list of available services from the connected Tracking Server appears in the Services drop-down list. Select a service you wish to subscribe to and click Subscribe.
  7. Features from the subscribed service should begin to appear on the map, and the tracking service should appear listed in the Tracking Layers section of the Manager tab.

In the Tracking Layers section of the Manager tab, you can click on a service in the list to zoom to the spatial extent of the features in that service.
