Viewing Tracking Services as KML Layers

Prerequisite:

The Tracking Server Web Connector (and the Tracking Server it is connecting to) must be configured correctly and running in order to execute this procedure.

You must also have a KML-compatible viewing application installed, such as ArcGIS Explorer.

The Tracking Server Web Connector provides a web page that allows you to quickly consume tracking services from Tracking Server in KML-compatible viewing applications.

Steps:
  1. Enter the URL of the Web Connector KML services web page into a web browser.

The general format of the URL is http://[Web Connector URL Prefix]/rest/KmlServices

  2. A dynamically-generated web page displays a list of links. A link is provided for each available service from Tracking Server.
  3. Click on the link of the service you want to view and download the resulting KML file.

The download of the KML file may behave slightly differently in different web browsers. Make sure you can locate the downloaded file on your system.

  4. Open the KML file in a KML-compatible viewing application, such as ArcGIS Explorer.

If you are using ArcGIS Explorer, it is recommended to use the most current version available to get the best results.

  5. The tracking service should now appear as a KML layer in the application.

For example, in ArcGIS Explorer, the KML layer will appear in the Contents window, and real-time features streaming from Tracking Server will appear on the map, as shown below.
